Genesee Country Village & Museum

Maple Sugar Festival

I took my 3 oldest boys (ages 10, 7 and 5) to the Maple Sugar Festival last Friday.  It was our first time going to the Genesee Country Village & Museum, it was about a 40 minute drive from Fairport.  When we entered into the Historic Village we saw two bulls walking towards us with their trainer.  The boys loved seeing them up-close and learning their names, Buck and Dan.  The first house we went into was the Livingston-Backus House, the ladies were cooking by the fire and we were able to try the maple hermits, they were tasty!! Then we headed to the Tinsmith Shop, we watched the tinsmith at work and purchased a take-and-make tin ornament kit to continue the fun at home ($4).  After that we went to the Jones Farm to learned about the making of homemade sausage.  The last area we explored was the Nature Center where we tasted Sugar on Snow, learned about tapping tools and visited the Sugarhouse to watch the steam rise from the modern evaporator.  We could smell the aroma of syrup in the air as we saw sap boiled down into delicious maple syrup!
