August marks the annual celebration of National Breastfeeding Month, and this year’s theme, “Nourish, Sustain, and Thrive,” emphasizes the importance of supporting breastfeeding as a vital part of maternal and child health. The Rochester Regional Breastfeeding Committee is dedicated to increasing breastfeeding and lactation rates in our community and will be engaging in a series of initiatives to promote this cause.
In collaboration with various partners, the committee is excited to announce a yearlong commitment to enhance breastfeeding support through special programs funded by a grant from the New York State Department of Health’s “Breastfeeding, Chestfeeding and Lactation Friendly New York” initiative.
The National Breastfeeding Month approach is built on three foundational pillars:
*Nourish: We provide early prenatal education sessions to equip expecting parents with the knowledge and skills needed for successful breastfeeding.
*Sustain: Our postpartum support groups offer ongoing assistance and encouragement for new parents as they navigate the challenges of breastfeeding.
*Thrive: We foster a robust support network that empowers lactating parents to connect with one another, feel welcome in community spaces, and receive support in the workplace.
We are committed to educating healthcare professionals to better support lactating parents, worksite education and recognition programs, and creating community spaces that promote breastfeeding. By partnering with places of worship, local stores, parks, and other frequented community areas, we aim to ensure that all parents have access to the support they need in their breastfeeding journey.
As we celebrate National Breastfeeding Month, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our coalition members, volunteers, and lactating parents for their dedication to creating a healthier community. Together, we can make a significant impact on the lives of families in Rochester.
